What Are the Things Every Christian Should Do Before and After Moving?

What Are the Things Every Christian Should Do Before and After Moving?

I always like to start with something personal, so please bear it with me.

I grew up in a Christian home and ever since my birth, I have moved only once. It was during my childhood. My parents wanted to be near the ocean and in a warm climate, so we moved. However, unlike most kids of my age, I wasn’t looking forward to a new room, a huge garden, an indoor swimming pool in the new house or whether I was going to make new friends in the new neighborhood. All I could think of was if there was a church in the new area –that’s the result of being raised by two amazing Christian parents and I must say I’m proud of the results. Now looking back, I can clearly see how much my belief influenced that initial move as a kid.

My parents have been married for twenty-five years and they are now in their seventh home of their marriage. With each move, they have learned how to make God the center of the often stressful process of moving.

Whether it’s about finding the right home, deciding over a new interior design or choosing only essential items to be packed away in cardboard boxes, moving is a roller-coaster of emotions and feelings of doubt, anxiety, despair and even some traces of self-loathing. You might love new experiences but your mind won’t. Even experts claim that moving is one of the most stressful life events, coming right after divorce or the death of a loved one.

However, when you are a firm believer and follower of Christ, your fresh start in a new home cannot be all doom and gloom. Whatever the reason for moving may be, if you learn to trust God and make Him the focus of your moving process, I promise the journey will be exciting as well as comforting.

Before Moving

Consult With God

Consult With God

“Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.”

– From James 4:14-15

Unlike non-believers, we cannot do anything on our own. And, remember that in everything you do or say, it should be to glorify God’s name.

Maybe there’s more than just changing jobs to your decision to move to a new house, but even then, you should consult with God.

The Holy Spirit will be a great source of guidance for when you are making a move. He will reveal to you exactly where you need to be, which moving company you should trust and when the right time to move is.

Consult the Bible

Consult the Bible

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given to him”

– From James 1:5

The Bible might not say anything about thermodynamics or nuclear power, but it does cover the manner you, as a Christian, have to act or respond in a given situation.

I personally believe that the Bible has an answer for almost everything that’s important to us. So, if you are confused over a few things about your new move, I suggest you open up the Bible and let it guide you.

Pray

Pray

“And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests.”

– From Ephesians 6:18

“Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you.”

– From Jeremiah 29:12

“Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise.”

– From James 5:13

Prayer is how we communicate with God and ask Him what we need and want. So, trust me, only prayer can ease the stress of moving home.
